Come as you are. Leave feeling better.

What is Yoga?

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to yoke or to unite, a joining of body, breath and mind into one harmonious whole. Far more than a form of exercise, yoga is one of the world’s oldest living wisdom traditions, with roots stretching back over 5,000 years in ancient India.

Yoga was first mentioned in the Rig Veda, one of the oldest sacred texts in the world. It was in the Upanishads, (another set of ancient Indian scriptures) where the philosophy of yoga began to take shape, emphasising the unity of all life and the pursuit of self-realisation.

The sage Patanjali, later compiled these teachings into the Yoga Sutras, a classical text believed to date somewhere between 200 BCE and 200 CE. Their intention was to bring together existing yogic wisdom into a form that everyone could follow and understand. The Yoga Sutras describe an eightfold path encompassing ethical living, physical postures, breathwork, sensory withdrawal, concentration and meditation, all leading toward a state of inner stillness and clarity.

Importantly, physical posture (asana) is just one of these eight limbs, never intended as an end in itself. In the ancient texts, posture was understood as a way of preparing the body to sit comfortably and steadily for meditation. Yoga, in its truest sense, is the practice of turning inward.

Yoga As a Path To wellbeing

Over centuries, the physical and contemplative practices of yoga have been shown to offer profound benefits for the whole person, body, mind and spirit. Modern research continues to affirm what ancient yogis understood intuitively: that mindful movement, conscious breathing and present-moment awareness are powerful medicines.

This is the heart of therapeutic yoga, bringing the ancient wisdom of yoga into service of your health and wellbeing, meeting your body where it is today, not where you think it should be.

What is Therapeutic Yoga

Therapeutic yoga is a gentle, intentional approach that goes beyond the traditional class setting. Rather than focusing on performance or achieving a particular pose, it is tailored to support your body’s unique needs, whether you are recovering from injury or illness, managing a health condition, navigating the changes that come with ageing, or simply wanting to move and feel better in your everyday life.

Each session draws on the healing principles of yoga, mindful movement, pranayama (breathing) and body awareness, applied with purpose and care. Poses and sequences are thoughtfully adapted so that everyone, regardless of age, fitness level or physical ability, can participate safely and comfortably.

What Can Therapeutic Yoga Help With

Showing group yoga participants in standing pose with raised arms

✔ Bone Health: Weight-bearing and resistance-based movements help stimulate bone density, supporting long-term skeletal health and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

✔ Mobility: Gentle, guided movement helps restore and maintain your balance and range of motion, making everyday activities easier and more comfortable.

✔ Flexibility: Slow, mindful stretching releases tension held in the body, improving flexibility while reducing the risk of injury.

✔ Sleep Issues: As we age, sleep often becomes an issue. Yoga helps the mind and body to relax and move into sleep more easily.

Therapeutic yoga can assist with a number of other issues including:
– pain
– anxiety and stress
– cancer recovery
but these issues are best addressed with one to one yoga therapy sessions as opposed to therapeutic yoga classes and sessions can be booked from the Booking page.

My Classes are different

They are small (8 people maximum) which allows me to work with each of the attendees and their needs (please note that classes allow only basic modifications due to it being group work).

Classes are designed for specific issues (ie. bone health, back pain, sleep) and students are invited to take part based on what they feel capable of doing on the day.

Based in Camden and serving the Macarthur region, these small-group classes (maximum 8 people) focus on the heart of yoga: connection, awareness and going inward, where true healing happens.

Every person receives individual attention and guidance.

Classes are held at 12 McCrae Drive, Camden South NSW 2570.
